Open Source 2.0: A Conceptual Revolution Towards Open Source Resources ?

What is « open source »? A meaning in debate.

[Project Roadmap]

Research and educational knowledge base to explore the concept of « open source » in an attempt to understand and explain its meaning for the digital revolution.

Usually associated with the idea of software with a source code available, there is in fact plenty of evidences suggesting that the concept of « open source » extends far beyond software. With the emergence of other openness movements (open science, open education, open hardware, open data…), the concept of « open source » seems meaningful to qualify a variety of types of digital (and open) resources that would provide their source files to enable their modification.

From open source software to open source resources?

This knowledge base is designed to be a tool for anyone who has the ambition to understand « open source » and dive into the complexity of its meaning.

Important

The vision of open source introduced here goes against current conventions and is also a critique of the mainstream interpretation.

This project is a call for a profound reform of the Open Source Initiative and a move beyond the Open Source Definition. They have probably failed in their mission of defining « open source ».

Content

[Project just initiated; see proposal for more info on potential content and project orientation]

Need to build a structure for the knowledge base by figuring out meaningful and generic knowledge to grasp the notion.

Resources

Resources are collected to feed and think this knowledge base in an attempt to establish the state of the art around the meaning of open source. Explore this material to dive further into the topic, to prepare references and bibliographies and to fuel your critical thinking.

This knowledge base contains one of the largest, if not the largest, bibliography related to the meaning of « open source ». Explore its shared Zotero Library

See the knowledge base resource page for a more complete view of the available additional materials.

Educational Workshops

Associated « Open Source Educational Resources » are created and shared along with the knowledge base to provide educational activities on open source.

Have a look to the list of educational workshops.

Contribute

Help us to spread the world about open source 2.0! Share around you about this conceptual revolution.

There are various ways to bring meaningful contributions regarding your skills, time and motivation.

Researchers are invited to fuel reflection and debate while reinforcing the quality of content, teachers and individuals with pedagogical skills can help make content more digestible and effective, people with computer skills (computer scientists, designers, etc.) can also contribute to shape this knowledge base.

Brings your skills and ideas if you think you have something relevant to bring!

The knowledge base is built openly on the Codeberg (software) forge. Please report any problems or needs on the issue tracking system.

Licence

This intellectual resource is in the public domain as far as possible, under the Creative Commons licence CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
